Not a die-hard fan, really, but I've seen most of TOS and read a lot of the novels

I don't have a problem with them blowing up Vulcan. (I mean, I would have preferred if they hadn't, but I think it's dramatically effective.) I do have a problem with the massive, massive plot holes in the reboot movie. I enjoyed parts of it--I loved Spock/Uhura, and the casting was fabulous--but oh, the plot holes.
