That's what I think. Cos, even if it's in canon, their past is going to affect how they react to things and people-so John whose mom died is going to have a different reaction to being invited to visit Cam's family from John whose mom divorced their father and left.
I was going to say I'm like you and tend to have a few broad ideas, but actually I'm not sure I even do that. I think the only stuff I have that's consistent is what I've taken from the show (John's the little brother, Cam's the big brother, Lorne's got a sister with kids, and I think that might literally be it.Weird)
