Ito is actually a Japanese first name, while Zhang is a Chinese last name. I suppose she could be half/half? It's rare, but I had an elementary school friend who was half/half.
ETA: Actually, I take that back about it being rare. I guess I'm parroting some of my grandmother's sensibilities--there's a lot of distrust/dislike of Japanese amongst Chinese who survived WWII. It's probably different if Zhang's parents were already American.
