Though it sort of bothers me that I can actually come up with a possible explanation on the spot, and that you noticed the gaping plot holes, but that apparently no-one on the entire crew noticed or thought to toss in a better explanation than we got.

So much. Especially Kirk - it's nice to have a military leader who they acknowledge is smart, rather than trying to put across as sort of dim compared to the scientists.
