I'll be spending Christmas with my parents again this year (as I have every single year thus far) and my job is always to make a chocolate dessert, because I (and my sister, when she was still there) don't like Christmas pudding, which my mum buys. No problem - I have a standard recipe that's very easy.
This year, my mum decided she was going to make a Christmas cake as well, which I also don't like (though I did make one when I was 18 - I decorated it with a blue moon!). So I decided I needed cake that I can eat, but cake is not something I've ever been very good at, so I also decided I needed a trial run, which was tonight.
But! I made ginger cupcakes with lemon icing, and they could use some more ginger and the icing was too runny, but still, cupcakes and they actually don't taste half bad. I'm so proud of myself!
It's odd, actually: I go to a craft club every Friday and we make really simple things like felt mice and stencils, but I still get a huge kick out of making something! from scratch! by myself! Which is how I feel about the cupcakes as well. Small things, I guess :)
