Heroes: Hot Seat (Matt/Mohinder, Molly)

Title: Hot Seat
Author: [personal profile] bluflamingo
Fandom: Heroes
Pairing: Matt/Mohinder
Rating: PG
Words: 1000
Disclaimer: No, I don’t own them. To my profound disappointment.

Summary: Sometimes, it needs a while to take; written for [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000 (pic below cut); spoilers up to the end of season 2. I'm not sure how this story came from this picture, but it sprang into my head fully-formed on the walk home from uni so I'm not asking questions.

Hot Seat

“Do you believe in love at first sight?” Molly asks. When Matt turns from the TV to the kitchen table, she’s looking between him and Mohinder, homework abandoned, and Mohinder’s stopped working as well to look at her, the beginnings of a smile tugging at his face.

“Well, the first time I saw Mohinder, he hit me over the head with a fire extinguisher, so…” Matt says, pretending to consider.

“I thought you’d come to kill Molly,” Mohinder protests. He sounds completely serious, but Matt’s come to recognize the tiny wrinkle at the corner of his eyes that means he’s kidding.

“I’m not saying you couldn’t make a good defense for it in a court of law,” he says, getting a raised eyebrow from Mohinder. “And, you know, clearly I managed to fall for you despite that.”

“That’s – actually a little sweet,” Mohinder says, definitely considering for real this time. “In a slightly disturbed way.”

“You hear that?” Matt asks Molly, who’s smiling at them both. “I’m sweet.”

“In a slightly disturbed way,” Mohinder repeats, but he’s fighting a grin.

“Give it up, Suresh,” Matt says, pushing for the grin to become real. He loves how Mohinder looks when he smiles. “I know what you’re really thinking.”

Mohinder sighs. “You can read my mind, Matthew. Of course you know what I’m really thinking.” He smiles innocently, not quite the grin Matt was angling for, and Matt gets a babble of French from in head, not one word of which does he understand. He contemplates sticking his tongue out, but decides he’s too mature for that, at least while Molly’s around.

“You didn’t answer the question,” Molly protests.

“I did,” Matt tells her, just a bit of emphasis on the I. “I absolutely believe in love at first sight. It just sometimes needs a while to take properly.”

He’s still tuned into Mohinder’s thoughts, which is the only reason he picks up a thought being cut off before he can catch it. Whatever it is, it can’t be too bad, because when he looks over, Mohinder smiles warmly at him, and says, “Yes,” his voice liquid and smooth with affection.

When he’s done tucking her in that night, Molly tugs at his hand and whispers, “Can I tell you a secret?”

“Of course,” Matt says, sitting on the edge of the bed.

“You can’t tell Mohinder I told you,” Molly adds earnestly, and Matt feels a chill of unease. He very carefully doesn’t read her mind for a hint of what’s coming.

“Molly –“ he starts.

“It’s nothing bad,” she says quickly. “I promise.”

“Okay,” Matt says. He’s still not sure he should be hearing anything that Molly doesn’t want Mohinder to know they know, but he’s always been curious, and becoming a detective has just made it worse.

Molly looks up at him solemnly. “He cried. When you were shot and we went to the hospital to wait for you to wake up. He thought I was asleep.” Her solemn look cracks for a second, and she sits up for a hug.

“Everything’s fine now,” Matt says, holding her close, but he’s barely paying attention to what he’s saying, distracted by the memory of Mohinder’s warm ‘yes,’ in response to Molly’s questions about love at first sight. He doesn’t remember much of Kirby Plaza, just the feel of someone’s hands – Mohinder’s hands – on him, a voice in his ear saying, “You’re going to be fine, just hold on. Just hold on,” absolutely calm. Mohinder came by the hospital a lot while he was recuperating, and he was never anything but perfectly composed, perfectly calm and reassuring, and he didn’t give one hint that he wanted to be anything other than Molly’s co-parent until Matt’s divorce was definitely happening.

Matt can’t really imagine him crying in a hospital waiting room, over him. Or rather, he can, very clearly, and he’d really rather not.

“Matt?” Molly says, drawing back. “You won’t tell him, will you?”

“No, sweetheart, I won’t. It’ll be our secret.”

Mohinder’s watching a pan of water boil when Matt leaves Molly’s room, but he turns his head and smiles. “Is she asleep?”

“Nearly,” Matt says, putting his arms round Mohinder’s waist. Mohinder leans back into him with a quiet, contented sigh. “Was that true?” Matt asks.

“Was what true?” Mohinder asks. Matt can’t see from behind, but he thinks Mohinder has his eyes closed.

“What you told Molly, about being in love at first sight.”

“Yes,” Mohinder says.

“Even though you thought I was going to kill Molly?”

“She called you her other hero,” Mohinder says. “I had your gun, I could have shot you.”

That shouldn’t make Matt feel as good as it does – it shouldn’t make him feel good at all – but it does, and not just because he likes being one of Molly’s two heroes. “What did you think?” he asks. Mohinder shrugs against him. “When I said it needed a while to take. Sorry,” he adds, even though Mohinder and Molly are used to him picking up things not entirely on purpose.

He does it again this time, catching a second’s thought of Janice. “Hey, no,” he says quickly, hugging Mohinder harder for a moment. “Not just because of the baby.”

“Right. You would have left your wife to move to New York and live here with me,” Mohinder says dryly. “I understand, Matt.”

“No you don’t.” Matt frowns, trying to explain. “You made it easy to leave her,” he says finally, and he doesn’t need to read Mohinder’s mind to know hearing that makes him feel better. It’s still strange to realize that he doesn’t always know what people are thinking, even when he can read their minds.

“Well, I’m glad you had long enough for it to take,” Mohinder says, ultra-solemn again.

Matt thinks about him in the waiting room, crying and waiting for Matt to wake up. “Yeah,” he says, kissing Mohinder’s neck so he shivers. “Me too.”

Ooh! Unexpected and totally awesome. You are feeding my muse. At this rate the ranch is going to be a very crowded place.
