SGA 506: The Shrine
Skipping Ghost in the Machine, because it makes my head hurt, and I thought the plot was dumb. Also, if they could bring back *Carson*, why not Elizabeth? I mean, I know why not, too much behind the scenes drama, but still. At least Carson's gone back to Earth, I guess...
God, John. Joe Flanigan's really good at that whole 'holding it together by half a thread' thing. I would have *loved* to see John, Ronon and Teyla on their own together (um, together, with no-one else there, so that actually makes sense), just to see what they're like when they're not all holding it together because there's someone else there.
John and Teyla are so good with Rodney when he's got really bad - so gentle and careful. And Jeannie, of course. I love Jeannie, the way she leaves in order to fall apart, and stands up for what she thinks is the right decision.
Keller - okay, I get where she's going with the whole 'never give up, we can fix it' thing but - the guy you like is sick and probably dying, and has told you he's in love with you. I'm pretty sure that's the point where you remove yourself from his care, because you're too emotionally involved, and not really able to make professional decisions. I know this is SGA, where they frequently pretend there aren't any other doctors in the city but - leaving aside the whole 'he's my patient, I get final say' thing, just no. That said, I do like her standing up to John and the others, which she wouldn't have done last season.
Rodney's 'I love you' to Keller - yeah, I don't think so. One drink the better part of a year ago, and they clearly get on well enough, so, why no further move if he's in love? Unless I love you is the best way he has of expressing some kind of attraction at that point in the disease. I wonder if Keller believes him.
Rats, what else did I have to say?
Radek coming down from the jumper bay and just walking past silently was great, so, so subtle, the kind of thing you don't catch until the second time through, when it's suddenly obvious that he went to say goodbye.
Various other random things...
1. Amelia the gate tech - I know she only has a few words but I *love* her. I loved that whole little exchange with her and Woolsey, it was so entertainingly random. Actually, I loved the whole scene as the team was going out, but then, I always do. I would totally watch an entire episode around what happens in the gate room, never seeing the rest of Atlantis or the other worlds. I'm weird like that.
2. John, if you're going to be running around metal piers in the middle of the night, maybe some shoes? That must be cold. Which, yes, I know, not what I was meant to be focussing on in that scene (which was completely adorable) but, you know, the uniforms made sense this week, I've got to focus on something.
3. Teyla's green coat is still gorgeous. She has such nice clothes.
4. The pulled-back scene of the team on the gate, and the valley and the glacier was *gorgeous*. SGA has some amazing special effects backgrounds (like the blown out towers in the first episode of last season, when John and Zelenka went to fix... whatever it was they went to fix).
5. OMG, listen to Ronon and Teyla when they tell you about Pegasus. They know what they're talking about.
6. Speaking of gate room moments - I have no idea why, but I love the few seconds between them bringing Rodney through the gate and John running off. I think it's the John and Woolsey thing - I never expected to like Woolsey, but they work well together, from a story point of view. In reality, I expect they'd kill each other (well, John would. Woolsey's too polite).
7. Hi, random marine on the mission. Where did you go after the waterfall?
8. A couple of people have said that John going along with the whole 'one day, then death with dignity' thing is kind of out of character, that he'd push to the bitter end, and (surprise surprise) I disagree. Look at Elizabeth and the nanites when she was injured in the Replicator attack on Atlantis - he was completely prepared to let her die than reactivate them, because he knew it was what she'd prefer. Ditto Rodney in this, and, okay, he was wrong, but I don't think it was such a stretch to think that.
And that's all I've got.
I'm not thinking about the time travel, time lines, thing, because it makes my head hurt. Time travel always does. Also, the ending *really* makes my head hurt. I mean, what did Cam *do* for ten years before getting on that ship? He doesn't even exist at this point, and neither does the SGC. It's not like he can just turn up on the Air Force's doorstep and explain that he came from another timeline. What did he do for the next fifty years, come to that? Because my mind is going to seriously warped places (I'm sorry, there's a weird vibe between him and his grandfather) and I *do not want* it to be going there.
That aside, I liked this. Cam, Sam and Daniel were... not funny, given the circumstances, but they had some good lines, especially Daniel. I like him a lot more when he's sarcastic. And Sam, flying - that was cool. As was the walk through the SGC at the very start - see, more stuff where they just do boring day-to-day things. I love that stuff (God, I'm a terrible sci-fi fan. Aliens, strange worlds, mysterious devices - nope, I just want people snarking at each other and discussing whether they have time to get breakfast). The threeway interview was cool as well; I like that Cam's the one who comes closest to actually cracking. I like that Cam actually sometimes does crack a little bit, that he's not been toughened up to all the really bad SG1 stuff that the others have, even though he's had some really bad moments.
Also - Vala to the rescue, even when she was a bad guy. And Teal'c and Cam bonding - I always forget how much I like the idea of the two of them together until I see them on screen again.
And Landry - God, he gives me the creeps. What right do they have to change the timeline? Excuse me, their timeline was there first! It's the one that should have existed, what right does he have to keep it the way it is now? Shudder.
Interestingly, continuing the theme of Cam abandoned out of time without John. It's always Cam - I'd be getting a complex if I were him, even though he doesn't know it happened this time. I want to write the story where, in the first alternate timeline, he looks up John and finds that he was killed in Afghanistan a few years ago (no, I don't know why he was either). Which is sad and terrible, and then Cam runs into Brendan Dean (the male lead from Thoughtcrimes, who's played by the same guy as plays John) and they somehow end up together, both of them with these secrets they can't tell (Brendan's partner reads minds). It'd be totally pointless, emo-angst porn, but I want to write it anyway. Anyone have any idea where Cam might have been living in that timeline?
