The idea for the ancient device was cool and it was amusing to see everyone so used to alternate universe people showing up.
I don't know where the idea came from - I'd already got well into the story and brought up the device by name before I realised how Lorne could have got there. It was originally just going to be a random research station to get some of the cast out the way :-)
