Cam as a civilian works beautifully, and I love that he left after the bombing, that makes perfect sense.
He was so close to leaving, in the show, I just think, you know, one little thing and he'd be gone. And now he gets a bit of a kick out of the fact that he's back working for the military again, and also incredibly depressed by the fact that he left to do something where he felt like he was helping, and instead he's spending a lot of time justifying bad things that happen in the name of Atlantis. So probably a series of random people from alternate universes makes for a nice break :-)
