They do not deserve him, IMO, so to "redeem" him and graciously let him join Rodney and his team is an unhappy ending, and devalues that John and his life and death.
Hmm, yeah. I dunno, I guess I just want John to survive and be happier, though yes, I don't know that it needs to be written quite so much as Rodney doing him a huge favour. I just hate the idea that they left him in the desert to die, and no-one even went to check if he was alive. It seemed as out of character as the stories where John is mean and horrible, because after all the effort they put into talking up the SGC to John (when they could have just ordered him off the case) it's weird for them to care so little for him.
