I have one thing to say about Vegas (the episode, not the place. I've nothing to say about the place).

Rodney? Wearing a wedding ring (when they're planning the air strike, gold band on his left hand). So all the post-eps where he runs off with John to live happily ever after - maybe need to get him divorced or something first?

You know what would be easier? Set John up with Cameron Mitchell :) Except, don't, because I'm writing it.

I'm assuming that episode is a lead in to whatever's going to happen back in normal verse next week? Cos otherwise, it was really just very random.

I've actually read some great 'and then Rodney rescues John and they live happily ever after' fics for this episode (which, God, really needs Rodney to be rewritten as a little nicer, since the alternative is John saving them and being left to bleed to death in the desert). It's just starting to freak me out that *no-one else has noticed* the wedding ring, considering how observant fandom generally is.

I read them and realised they depress me - I do not think it's a gift for John if Rodney "saves" him after all and takes him in hand. I wasn't kidding when saying I came to find the dying soothing and fitting in a way. They do not deserve him, IMO, so to "redeem" him and graciously let him join Rodney and his team is an unhappy ending, and devalues that John and his life and death. I surprised myself realising that but I could go on for hours about it now.

Well .... I'm sorry but - observant? .... to me it was obvious, but then even the look he sent after Keller was seen as professional and just to show she was with the FBI and even still-frames wouldn't make the non-seers believe. Soe maybe Rodney is married to Radek, or he has the ring to fend of his many adoring female followers while really being single, or he is already divorced but couldn't get it of his finger.

Hmm, yeah. I dunno, I guess I just want John to survive and be happier, though yes, I don't know that it needs to be written quite so much as Rodney doing him a huge favour. I just hate the idea that they left him in the desert to die, and no-one even went to check if he was alive. It seemed as out of character as the stories where John is mean and horrible, because after all the effort they put into talking up the SGC to John (when they could have just ordered him off the case) it's weird for them to care so little for him.

I agree with you, I was hurting and furious at first, but I saw it two weeks ago and even after only a little while I found it so much more HONEST, that rarest of all things, of have him there alone, after being fucked around so strangely by the powers that are the FBI and TPTB especially. The very callousness that made them mentally pressure him and then leave him to die alone makes every happy ending a lie, and there is nothing more unpalatable to me. Why they needed him was a bit of a stretch to me, considering that he was "such a loser" and a crook to boot, what with their super technology and brains, but due to the script without him they'd all be dead - and canon SGA would not be in trouble, as I outlined in my post - what I keep saying so boringly and repetitiously is that those suits realistically wouldn't care, that worried "John, don't go in there" was not just too late but also fanservice rather than IC for that Rodney. It wasn't weird that the FBI did not care for a crooked worthless ex-cop ... I'm just personally miffed that he won't be left in peace! Of course they will come to clean up the Wraith-y mess so they will find him, something I actually refused to consider once I accepted the ending.
Also, why would he be happier if he survived? What would have changed? He's not dumb, he'd find out that countless other universes are now doomed, and he's out of a job, deep in debt, also will be found out to have embezzled the money - only in fiction would that small difference he made change his life and wipe out Afghanistan, only in fiction would that sort of person he was portrayed at become an FBI member or even go on space missions for just such a small thing as driving his bugged car to the right spot.

See, but you could argue that they would take him in - maybe they need him for the gene, maybe they need him for something else, and that's why they went to all the trouble to explain it to him. Maybe he'd want in, and they'd persuade him, and if we believe that the real John going to Atlantis made things much better for him, why not this John as well?

I think I like the idea that he's meant to be working for the SGC, and that things would be better then. I mean, no wonder he's depressed, all that bad history, and a job he clearly doesn't like, with no-one who seems to give a damn about him. I can totally see the SGC wanting him for whatever reason, and using the embezzling to force him to come work for them (a bit like Jack's persuading) and then things get better from there. I just prefer it to heroic death, but clearly we're going to disagree on that :o)

I hate heroic deaths. I don't watch movies that end like that and I used to never read death fic.

It's just in this case ... and we agree on the why, we would both like somebody to care about him! I'm just a sad sod unable to see that potential in the other characters on screen ... hm, perhaps the nurse. Yeah ok *focusses on the nurse* she seemed to only person to genuinely like him and have known him for a bit.

Ok, so in my case it probably helps that I already have an au in my head, where Cam Mitchell is one of the guys who nearly bombed John and comes to see him, and they get friendly and end up on sg1 or whatever together. Because Cam's exactly the kind of guy who'd want to help John, and he didn't show up in the episode to be a dick to John.

So it's easier for me to imagine that he could be happier in a future where he doesn't die.

I agree - and I envied you before already for seeing/loving that pairing. In the past I couldn't BECAUSE I liked them both; they were just too similar, I liked them for similar reasons and saw them as friends, and I found it unlikely they would want to fuck. Now I just say "good on you".

Imagine them as just friends on sg1 if that works for you (I want to write the story, but I've no idea which way it would go).

I agree. I'm just ridiculously overinvested in the character, even an au version of him, so I want to believe that he's living on happily somewhere because they came and got him, and things got better. Just, you know, not with Rodney till Rodney gets divorced!

Oh I understand, I love John. To a version of him fall so far is heartwrenching, even though it's a John that doesn't seem to want things to get better (surely David could have bailed him out if he'd go to him).

Heh heh. I completely agree. This Rodney and Woolsey seem like too big of jerks to help John out (and no, saving his life would not count - that falls under 'not being evil'), but given that he knows about aliens anyways and has the strongest expression of the ATA gene (even of the writers forget...) I could see him being, ahem, 'encouraged' to work at Area 51 or the SGC. It's not far from there to meeting a certain pilot.

Exactly :o) I can't really see him on Atlantis - all of Rodney's talking about the other Sheppard, just seems like it would be too much pressure for the Sheppard they do have. SG1, on the other hand...

Yeah, this John isn't going to be heading to Atlantis anytime soon. It would never have the same affect here as did on our John, because there would already be an existing expedition that he wouldn't fit in to. Rodney's weird... obsession sounds too strong, but his whatever with the alternate-alternate-Sheppard would make it even worse. They'd all be either expecting a-a-Sheppard or thinking too much about Sheppard's past.

haven't seen it yet, but i've seen speculation that this is proof of John as a gay character--i think the bit about the AU versions speculating on the 'Lantis version getting in trouble with the Air Force? and also that he and Rodney are not it. Cam = obv better for John. XD
