So, because I have the will-power of a weak willed newt, I've sort of agreed to run a Cam Mitchell ficathon (blame [personal profile] kazbaby, she suggested it). The idea being that, having come late to SG1, there's a lack of 'trope' fic for Mitchell (aliens make them do it, slavery, amnesia, gender swap, mpreg etc), and that this is a terrible travesty which must be rectified.

Which, you know, it's not like we need *less* fic about the guy.

So, my questions are:
-Dreamwidth, livejournal, or both?
-Got any more suggestions for tropes, other than this list
-Would you prefer it to be an exchange, where people list pairings and tropes and I match you, or a prompt-based thing, where people pick their trope and then write whatever pairing/gen appeals to them?

I'm thinking sign-ups would open end of next week for about a week, and the deadline would be end of September, maybe?

Thoughts? Suggestions? Enthusiastic declarations of intent to write epic Cam Mitchell wing fic (you know you want to! If only so I don't end up doing it)

I think we overlooked jammies!fic. ;-)

I would suggest a prompt-based thingy, just because there's less pressure that way.

Perhaps for the SECOND Annual Cam Mitchell-a-thon... but I digress. :-D

Maybe on DW with lots of pimping on LJ?

Hah I just added Jammies totally without seeing your post!

Great twisted minds think alike?

Scary.

(I actually wrote jammies!commentfic. I put Jack in them, just to be different.)

Oh, that was *lovely*. I adore Jack. Also your icon.

I think on DW because of the longer comment length, but we should totally not abandon LJ; we can set up a mirror comm there with general information, and as the stories are done, post the information about them there with a link to where they are on DW. If the DW comm is set up to permit anonymous posting, i'm fairly sure people won't even need to use an OpenID account to comment, although in that case it would be very shiny if they sign their comments.

I didn't think it was going to be comment fic. Is that really what you meant?

Is it possible to set up a comm for anonymous posting (as opposed to commenting)?

Is Paul Davis ever going to get a promotion?

Excellent! I was hoping you'd be talked into this! (I can probably help, if you need it.)

I'm rather fond of prompt-based ficathons along the lines of [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_kree, but I know they tend to have higher dropout rates than exchange ficathons, which is obviously a disadvantage. (On the plus side, this format would mean less work for you.)

Are you thinking of soliciting prompts (scenarios, etc.) to be combined with the tropes, or just giving writers a trope (and possibly a pairing) and setting them loose?

I have no preference on the Dreamwidth vs. LiveJournal question.

I haven't seen anyone express a strong preference for an exchange-based ficathon yet, so I think you're safe in making it prompt-based. And mirroring the masterlist on both sites probably makes sense. I don't know how you'd do the trope-claiming post, though, if you plan on limiting the number of people who can writ each trope. (Which, I suppose, you don't necessarily have to do. There are lots of ways to write most of those tropes.)

Last year, Happy Fest let multiple people write the same prompt, so I don't think it matters so much to them. Of course, there's no rule against you taking the same approach.

But yeah, if you want to limit it to one person per trope, then having just one claims post probably makes sense. People can comment anonymously, as you said, or with OpenID.

I think it'd work to do it like [community profile] vid_commentary is running things. They're basically mirroring everything from one journal to the other.

I also vote for listing all of the tropes and letting people claim them.

I'll shift items from the comments up to the main post so they're easy to check out once I get done with dinner and family stuff.

Oh, and Yay!Cam Ficathon!

(list has now been updated in main post.)

i have no preferences as to LJ or DW, and I certainly can't write to deadline any more, but I am cheering you on and will certainly read and FB.

GO YOU!

Personally, I'd go for prompt-based, but it's not a huge deal either way. Same with DW vs LJ - DW is what I'd prefer, but LJ is fine as well.

Another trope suggestion (from the woman who is streaming Burn Notice): it's a new trope, but it's a honey: Cam/Victor.

Victor is the character that Michael Shanks played on Burn Notice.

There've been a flock of fics and commentfics featuring Jack and Victor (aka Daniel's twisted look-alike.)

Prompts would be good. I wish Big Bang wasn't eating my brains, but I doubt I'd do a good job with a fic exchange. I think you should host the ficathon on DW but mirror it on LJ. Is there an existing Cam community on LJ? You could probably ask to mirror there?

There's [community profile] mitchells_sg1, but I don't know how they feel about that.

I think they're just an announcement comm.
Saturday, July 18th, 2009 05:07 am (UTC)
ooh, i'm in.

i say DW and LJ.

and hey, whatever is easiest for you, matching pairings and/or tropes or exchange/pick and write.
Saturday, July 18th, 2009 04:01 pm (UTC)
This is an awesome idea. I personally prefer DW.

The deadline is going to be a problem for me, because I'm participating in SGA Bigbang which has a deadline for end of September, too. I don't know how many people will be affected by this.

Then again, my SGA Bigbang story is John/Cam so, even if I can't make it to this ficathon due to conflicting deadlines, I'll still be contributing something to the awesomeness that is Cameron Mitchell.
Sunday, July 19th, 2009 05:28 pm (UTC)
Oh, wow, you're writing John/Cam too?? That's terrific! I think you, me, [personal profile] kyizi, and [personal profile] slybrarian are the only ones writing John/Cam for SGA Big Bang. (And I think Sly is only writing them as a background pairing.)

Yay for contributing to the awesomeness that is Cam Mitchell!

I was writing Ba'al/John/Rodney first and then Cam sort of butted in and next thing I know I had to drop my story at around 5k and start writing Cam/John.

It's going so much better now that I stopped fighting him. Damn, but he can whine and then there's the puppy eyed earnest look. I never stood a chance.

Sunday, July 19th, 2009 09:25 pm (UTC)
If that would be okay with everyone else? That'd be great :) The BB deadline is Oct 14, final copy submitted to story database, no exceptions.

ETA: Or what femgenficathon does is have a posting period, a start and end date for submitting fic.

I'd prefer DW because it's easier for me to follow things.
