If the tag to Trick of the Light ends up exceeding the word count of the original story, I shall be severely displeased. Otherwise known as, oh my god, it's 4,800 words, end already!

(Trick of the Light is 5,900, give or take. Yeah, if I wrap it all up in 1000 words, I shall be mighty amazed).

I dunno, I remember days when 2000 words seemed impossible - I mean, days a couple of years ago, not ten years ago - and now keeping something to 2000 words seems impossible.

I hear you. I'm dreading my Bigbang fic. I'm aiming at 40k but until now every single scene has overshot my target word count. I really don't want to write more than 40k for this. 45k tops.

If things get tough, I could always cut the story at 40k and finish with, "rocks fall; everyone ascends. They have glowing-squid sex for eternity." Happy end!

Oh God, big bang. I signed up for it last year thinking, eep, how will I ever write 40,000 words - I ended up with nearly 73,000.

No, definitely don't follow my example, not least because I ended up cutting and rewriting about 40,000 words in the end. Which made the story much better, but would not have been my first choice for how to go about it!
