One final ficlet from the guess the line meme:
Future Planning: prompt John/Cam happy ending, for
spillingvelvet, vaguely future fic
Cam always expected that he'd be the one suggesting they get out of the world saving business. Well, really, he always thought that one of them would get killed on the job and the other one would get to live out the next few years regretting that he *hadn't* suggested they get out of the whole thing.
Whichever it was, he didn't expect John to say, 24 twitchy, anxious hours into his visit, "I think this is going to be the last time I go back."
Cam tried to sit up straight and check John's face, but John was leaning back against him, stopping him. "What?"
John shook his head, his hair rasping against Cam's shirt. "They're promoting Lorne," he said. "And I've got twenty years."
"Oh," Cam said softly, weirdly relieved. "I thought – you want to leave Atlantis?"
John ducked his head and fell silent. Cam waited him out – usually whatever John dragged out like this was worth the wait.
Finally, John said, "We're winning the war against the Wraith – seriously winning, I can see the end. And... I don't know. Maybe I want what the rest of my team have."
Cam rubbed his thumb over John's stomach, acknowledging what John wasn't saying.
John rested his hand over Cam's, and said, very quietly, "I want it with you." He hesitated, then said, quickly, "I know it's not that easy. I'm not asking you to quit too, or even move in with me, but I just -"
"Ssh," Cam said. He knew he should give it more thought, but this felt right. "You should move in with me. I want you to. Or we could look for a place."
He knew he'd said the right thing when John relaxed back against him. "I'd like that," he said.
Cam grinned, pressing his nose into John's hair and making john laugh, shake his head to dislodge him. "I'm not ready to quit yet," he said.
"I know," John said, easily, and Cam couldn't read any falsity in it. "I'm not ready to leave the SGC yet either. If I finish my PhD, I'm hoping science will take me."
That did explain why John had been working more on his doctorate in the last few months... "Wait a minute," Cam said, trying to sit up again, and failing, again. "This isn't a new decision?"
"Not really," John said. Cam was pretty sure he was blushing, even though Cam couldn't see."I don't know. I wanted to be sure."
"You weren't winning against the Wraith a few months ago."
John shifted, telegraphing how awkward he felt. "I was heading back after four weeks vacation with you a few months ago."
"Oh," Cam said, unable to stop the grin spreading over his face. He wrapped his arms tight around John and leaned as far forward as he could, just enough to kiss John's cheek. John turned, still faintly red, but smiling, and kissed Cam on the mouth. "Why didn't you say so?" Cam asked.
John kissed him again. "I just did," he said.
