Inevitable - a lovely Cam/John fic.

Inevitable: confession, I had to look up which fic of mine Inevitable was when you requested it. Turns out it's a first kiss post-Enemy at the Gate fic, so at least now I know! I almost never know, when I'm writing something, how it's going to end – or often even what will happen after paragraph one, which is sometimes interesting and sometimes results in 4000 words being scrapped because it turns out nothing is going to happen. With Inevitable, I wrote most of the scene that comes after the end, and them scrapped it to leave the ambiguous ending. I like the idea of Cam asking and John staying, but I think, when it came down to it, Cam wouldn't ask. Not because he didn't want to, but because, even knowing it was what John wanted, he'd never be able to let go of the feeling that John really wants to be somewhere else.

When I wrote the further ending, that's what I wrote – that Cam doesn't ask, and there's just two lines about how, five days later, Atlantis leaves Earth, and John wonders if Cam's there to say goodbye. Which ended up being reused pretty much wholesale in Keep Going, for whatever that's worth.

Thank you! I love your john/Cam - and reread them often! When I read Inevitable I always sort of hope there will be a happy ending :-) But as you say, then it wouldn't be true to Cam.
