Where do you go if you want to buy paint, like for an inside room? Either the generic name for the kind of store (is it a DIY store, like in the UK?) or the name of a specific place.

Because I'm pretty sure Cam and John aren't shopping for paint in B&Q.

I'm remembering now why I like writing for sci-fi shows - as a general rule, they don't require me to find out random bits of American culture. Not that it won't, I'm sure, come in useful at some point in the near future, as newly discovered bits of randomness tend to do.

Thank you!

Lowe's or Home Depot. :)

FYI, it's probably obvious, but these are both name-brand stores and not generic terms. good luck!

Home Depot, or Lowe's. I think they're fairly universal across the USA but you might be able to check on their websites if they have stores in a specific state. The other option might be Ace's (hardware?), I think they have some paint but I'm not sure how widely spread they are.

They're basically do it yourself stores but I don't think people ever call them that. A locally owned store could be a hardware store in my experience (but that's Northeast and Midwest, so not sure if that's universal in terms of locations - some things aren't, like buying alcohol).

No, I couldn't remember hearing anything called that on any American tv, but I had a mental blank on what they would be called!

Usually a 'hardware' store will carry paints and supplies. The big 'box' stores like Walmart carry paint, and the lumber supply stores like Lowe's, Home Depot, Orchard Supply and Hardware, Ace. There are also little Mom and Pop stores. And, some brands of paints have their own stores, too. Like 'Glidden'.

Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Dixieline, Walmart, or local hardware stores also sell paint. I'm sorry for making you do research.

Consider the snippet I sent you part of the apology.

I don't mind doing research (for all that I sounded really whiny about it - I was actually more annoyed with myself for forgetting the word for DIY stores in America!), but since it got me a snippet of your fic, yes, I'm really irritated, grr :)

No idea (not that you need more help). I just wanted to say I can't wait to read this story.

Or a specialty paint store, which is where they'd have to go if they wanted any of the better brands. And if they do go to the paint store, they can buy all the little sample size jars instead of relying on paint chips, and the better quality primer that Cam insists on, and... can you tell I spent too much time at the paint store a few years back?

I can just imagine them ending up painting the room in patchwork colors when they get too invested in the sample pot thing :)

The generic term would be hardware store, Home Depot is probably the most recognisable name-brand store. Totally lookin' forward to the story..

I don't have the faintest idea, but give it a name like Barney's Paints or something.

Actually, we have a paint store like that around here - several all over the province by that name. Or was it country wide... borrow something if you like :)

Sci-fi fandom or not, this is actually the kind of research I love to do when writing fic. I will spend hours on wiki working out things like this. Other people call me weird. Which I probably am.

:)

I agree, it's fun to find this stuff out - I just tend to get distracted finding it out, rather than writing the story!

We go to Wal Mart here.

PS - Thank you so much for the commentary on my big bang fic! I never thought about how essentially they've switched golden boy/stuck there positions in this until you pointed it out, which was pretty cool!

Sherwin Williams is probably the biggest-name specialty paint store I know of. But Home Depot is a lot more widespread as a general home project supply store. And so infamously popular among gays in America that people often jokingly add an "o" to the name.
