I'm sure I've done this more than once before, but it's been a while so I'm stealing it from somehowunbroken:

Give me a ship, and I’ll tell you how they got together. (Two or three people to a ship, but please no more than that.) It can be as realistic or as cracky as you want, but be forewarned, I’m not promising a happy get-together, just one that I can realistically see happening.

Though I'm in a happy morning place at the moment (I know, I know, I'm sure it will pass!) so you might get more happy than depressing.
