So, where I work in the afternoons, I don't finish till 5, which means after it gets dark. I'm the only person in the building with most of the lights turned off, in an okay-but-not-great area of the city every day for about an hour. Also, the building makes weird noises. I've been totally fine with it for months now, until tonight, when I find out at 4 that I have to hang around and wait for some electricians who will be here some time before 8, but no idea when.

(on a sidenote - what kind of business account includes oh, an afternoon appointment is some time between 1 and 8? who works till 8pm on a regular basis?!)

Anyway - I'm freaking out being here alone, even though it's not even 6 and I know I'm perfectly safe. And at some point I have to go, alone with two strangers, to a building with no heat, no light and no power, to watch them plug in four fuses so I can power up the buidling again.

Welcome to my glamorous life!

In brighter news - whoever nominated Never Going Home for the mcshep awards, thank you! (I'm sure it's some kind of comment on fandom that, of the 50 or so stories I wrote last year, the single McKay/Sheppard one is the one that gets nominated for an award. I mean, probably because there aren't any rare slash pairing awards, but still. It made me smile).

who works till 8pm on a regular basis?!

Electricians, apparently. ;p
Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 06:01 pm (UTC)
:o)

No normal electrician works till 8pm on a regular basis! I should know, I used to know enough of them.

eeep! *keeps you internet company*

if i were you i would stop working and distract myself with fic (reading or writing) or stream a tv show off of surfthechannel.com at this point.

re: awards, haha, yeah. we should hold a shep/mitchell awards. there's a distinct possibility that you've written fully half the fics in this pairing, so you're bound to win most of it. XD
Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 07:40 pm (UTC)
The electricians are so not even coming. Which I knew at 6 o'clock, but I couldn't leave, just in case, and now it's nearly 8 and I'M STILL HERE! Not happy.

We don't even have working radio on our computers (though I'm not actually working any more, as you said, just messing around and plotting what I'll say when I ring the company tomorrow to tell them how much they suck).

we should hold a shep/mitchell awards. there's a distinct possibility that you've written fully half the fics in this pairing, so you're bound to win most of it.

Nah, the big name fans who wrote for sg-flyboys last year would win everything with the one story they ever wrote for that pairing. Cos I'm not cynical at all :o) There should totally be rare pairings awards though.

eek. well, now it's probably 10 ish or something (you're about 3-4 hours ahead of me from what i guess) and so you should be home and safe? and aww, no radio! porn battle to the rescue?

and bnfs wrote shep/mitchell? man, i really don't keep up with these things... is it that one person with the uh, um, crap. you know, sports things. something about sports? Towers on High or something? /fail

but the good part is that i now have to look back on that comm for fic that happened before i started reading! ...which i should probably do before i think of voting for any awards... *ponders*

The one you're thinking of is by [livejournal.com profile] minervacat, who is a bnf, but wrote the pairing anyway, so I don't count her. But yeah, last year's flyboys brought out all the people i consider big names in fandom to write (this year's on the other hand, was full of people who write the pairing a lot, which made me happy. I have weird hang-ups about the pairing and its fans, I guess :)
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 03:40 pm (UTC)
oh! *files that away for future reading* but yes, i can understand the possessiveness you get from shipping a rare pairing--especially if it's something you prefer over the big fandom otp. i don't know if i trust people who prefer mcshep to love my sheppard/mitchell right!
Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 08:41 pm (UTC)
Congrats on the nomination! We really do need some rare pairings awards. Well, I guess there are the Isis Awards for het, so we mostly need rare slash pairings awards.

And it totally sucks that you waited around until 8:00 for nothing. I hope you're home now, or well on your way. (Of course, if you are, you're probably not reading this...or do you have internet at home now?)

It does, particularly since I just rang them and was told that the electricians tried to see us at 2 but couldn't gain access (despite the fact that the door was open and I was sitting right there). Grr!

Gah! THat is creepy! You should not have to stay alone!

(Also, I'd totally nominate your John/Cam stuff. They should have awards for John/Cam)

Gah! THat is creepy! You should not have to stay alone!

The only time apart from last night when it really bothered me was when I ended up working on the lone worker policy while sitting there alone - reading about all the things that might happen to me freaked me out :o)
Monday, January 26th, 2009 07:08 pm (UTC)
eesh, I'll bet that was fun...
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 12:43 am (UTC)
Yikes. That would make me nervous. I remember the first time I stayed home alone while the rest of the family was on vacation. I made myself relax by wandering around my house topless.

John/Cam gets so little respect in fandom. And Colby/Lorne is probably a lost cause.

BTW: I'm debating going betaless on my story and posting it in instalments as I write, however, I worry that I may come up with an earlier scene and blow my linear progression, what's your opinion?
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 05:03 am (UTC)
Colby/Lorne is never a lost cause. It's the best pairing in the world ;p There's just not enough of it :(
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 05:24 am (UTC)
I'm currently in the middle of the Colby/Lorne (I really hate calling it that) fic that ate my brain. I've got thirteen pages and the thing keeps spawning on me.
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 05:34 am (UTC)
Would you like nuclear carrots to help the plot bunnies grow? ;P

Friday, January 23rd, 2009 06:08 am (UTC)
The plot bunnies are already on bunny growth hormones, what more harm can nuclear carrots do? It started out as the three pages and it's thirteen now.

What I'm really hoping for is a good beta who knows both Numb3rs and Stargate. And can kick my ass. I may post it in installments just to prove that I have been writing.
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 06:15 am (UTC)
I'd offer, but I just don't have time (school is eating my brain and time right now - just got home a bit ago actually and I'm taking a study break...well a Dean and Sam Winchester study break) and I'd never get back to you.
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 06:20 am (UTC)
I have an idea for a Colby/Lorne fic myself, actually, but I'm trying very very hard not to write it... It's off in my own little world where Colby and what-his-face (sorry-headache, nursing lab stuff to do, can't think tonight) both actually were at the SGC before even going Afghanistan and Dwayne! was actually stealing alien technology for the Chinese when he left and joined the DOJ and Captain Granger went undercover w/ the FBI to track him down. It goes horribly AU a bit after Trust Metric because Colby decides to go back to the SGC as Major Granger (and he gets to see Lorne more) and...yeah, I'm going to put the crack down and walk away slowly.
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 02:52 pm (UTC)
I would totally read that, should you ever change your mind about writing it. Give in to temptation, it's good for you :o)
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 05:59 pm (UTC)
Dooooooooooo it.

Small nitpick: Colby was never commisioned. In "The Mole" Dwayne calls him PFC Granger and only enlisted CID personnel can perform actual investigations.
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 06:16 pm (UTC)
I don't know, that PFC doesn't actually make sense to me timeline wise so he's an officer in my world :p (Assuming he went to College first and then the army, but maybe he did it the other way, but I would have thought he'd have made Sargent then.)
Saturday, January 24th, 2009 09:28 am (UTC)
Yeah. The time line is kinda wonky, especially if you use Dylan Bruno's birthdate as a basis. Even factoring in time for both college and a masters. I need to rework my timeline.
Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 05:11 am (UTC)
I was bored in class so I fiddled around with the timeline the other day.

Using the episode where Megan asks him what a 30 year old man likes, (I used 32 for my calculations) I came up with him graduating from high school in 94, college in 99 and joining the FBI in 05. If he enlisted out of high school, he would have had to have started college around 2001...which means he wouldn't have been in Afghanistan as depicted, which pretty much means he had to go the ROTC or academy way and was an officer. Throw a 2 year masters degree in and he joined up in 01. And who knows when he was in Afganistan or if/where he was posted before LA in the FBI. Also, I thought he said something sometime about being w/ special forces, but I can't remember if I'm thinking about the reporter episode and crossing up canon with fanon.
Thursday, January 29th, 2009 07:50 am (UTC)
I was trying to figure this out myself until work and school got in the way. I'm pretty sure he finished undergrad at least before joining the army because he says in "Assassin" that his college degree kept him off the front line and he was CID for three years (same episode: "What else was I gonna do with three years of interrogation experience.") Also only enlisted men are allowed to conduct investigations in the CID. I'm not sure that he has a masters, it's not a requirement.

Enlisted Requirements (to qualify as a CID agent):
- U.S. citizenship
- No record of psychological or pathological personality disorders
- No record of unsatisfactory credit
- Suitable character established by a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) leading to a Top Secret clearance
- No civil court or court martial convictions
- Physical profile 222221 or higher, normal color vision
- ST score of 110 or higher. ST 107 if tested on or after 2 January 2002
- Ability to speak and write clearly
- Minimum age of 21 with at least two years of military experience but not more than 10
- 2 years of college or at least 60 semester credit hours
- Maximum grade of E-5 Sergeant (non-promotable)
- 60 months of service obligation upon completion of the apprentice special agent course
- Prefer Soldiers with civilian or military law enforcement experience.

I'll try and piece together a decent timeline myself using this information. Even if it conflicts with canon, I can mitigate how badly I'm screwing things up.
Friday, January 23rd, 2009 02:51 pm (UTC)
I made myself relax by wandering around my house topless.

Not sure how well that would have worked at work :o)

John/Cam gets so little respect in fandom

That's cos everybody hates Cam and loves Rodney. I don't know why, but it seems to be true.

BTW: I'm debating going betaless on my story and posting it in instalments as I write, however, I worry that I may come up with an earlier scene and blow my linear progression, what's your opinion?

I'm totally in favour of more fic, but I see your point. I don't think I've ever written anything where I didn't end up going back and changing something major early on because it went off in a direction I wasn't expecting.
Saturday, January 24th, 2009 09:30 am (UTC)

Given Murphy's Law though, the electricians would have shown up then and you would not have waited in vain.
