I was supposed to be going with some friends to a whip cracking thing in a park nearish to me, but they've cancelled and I don't want to go on my own, so I'm sitting in my flat with nothing to do.

So, before I go up the wall from boredom, an old meme:

Vala Mal Doran and Laura Cadman - because I can't get the thought of how awesome those two would be together out of my head.

Vala/Laura, first kiss

Laura misses plenty about Atlantis once she’s back at the SGC, but she’d happily trade it all again, because, for the first time in years, she’s not conducting her entire life in full view of two hundred people.

Which means that, when her team tags along with SG1 and Vala says she’s never been to a stage show, there’s no-one to care that a week later Laura’s waving two tickets to Quilters at Vala over coffee in the mess.

“A musical play about frontier women, part of the women and domestic arts festival,” Vala reads. She doesn’t look convinced.

“It’s supposed to be really good,” Laura says, a little defensively. She spent two hours on her laptop after the mission, trying to find something loud and entertaining and colorful for Vala. Apparently, that’s in short supply right now. “We could drive over to Denver early, have dinner.”

Vala gives her an appraising look. “This sounds a lot like a date, Captain.”

Laura shrugs one shoulder. “Maybe,” she says, grinning. Nothing like being six month past don’t ask don’t tell getting tossed out to give a girl some confidence. “Say yes and find out.”

Vala looks at the tickets again, then back up at Laura, lips just curling up into a smile. “Only if you let me drive some of the way.”

Vala’s waiting outside the security check point when Laura pulls up. Laura was half-expecting one of Vala’s trademark head to toe leather outfits, but she’s wearing black pants and a silvery vest, her hair pinned up. Laura’s always thought the leather was hot, but there’s something about Vala in regular Earth clothes that makes her shiver. She likes the thought of the two of them being in a crowded theater with Vala’s secret.

“Not that I mind you staring at me as though you’ve forgotten your own language,” Vala says, smiling, leaning in the open passenger window and showing off a bit of cleavage. “But perhaps you could unlock this door, so I don’t have to stand out here all night?”

“I was admiring the view,” Laura says, popping the lock.

Vala nods solemnly. “I’ve always thought this was a terribly attractive example of a military mountain.” She tosses her leather jacket into the back seat, and holds out a bunch of pink tulips to Laura. “I’ve been reliably informed that flowers are traditional on a first date,” she says. “Though Daniel was somewhat unclear over whether I should be buying the flowers or not, being the girl.”

“We’re both girls,” Laura points out, taking the flowers. They’ll probably be dead by the time they get home, but she’s weirdly touched by the gesture. Also, amused by the thought of Vala and Daniel discussing dating etiquette. “I didn’t get you anything.”

“You have to pay for dinner, then,” Vala says loftily. “And you promised to let me drive, don’t think I’ve forgotten.”

They make small talk through dinner, and through the interval in the show, and Laura can’t keep the smile off her face, pleased that Vala seems to be having the same problem. It makes it easy to reach for Vala’s hand as they spill out of the theater, into the evening buzz, easy to swing their joined hands like it’s nothing as they walk between cafes and late-opening stores.

She goes automatically when Vala tugs at her hand, expecting to be pulled over to look at something, except Vala hasn’t moved, and Laura bumps gently into her. “What?” she asks.

“Apparently, a kiss is traditional,” Vala says.

“Usually at the end of the evening,” Laura corrects. Not that she’s making much of an argument, one hand light on Vala’s waist.

“What can I say?” Vala asks. “I get impatient.”

Someone cat calls them as they press closer together, Laura ducking her head to make up for the slight height difference, and she doesn’t care, because she’s kissing her hot alien friend in the middle of the street, surrounded by strangers, and it feels like all she’s ever wanted out of life.

I see it turned into a big Vala day. Perhaps because Vala can be shipped with so many people.

I love the idea of Laura taking Vala on a date, showing her around Earth, and of Vala consulting Daniel for dating etiquette. And now that I think about it, Laura and Vala probably would get along very well.

I love the idea of Vala going up to the Earthlings on her team and asking for Earth advice. I don't know why, it just amuses me.
