Jayne
“Nothing,” Jayne grunts.
“You didn’t look like that when you left,” Kaylee says.
“It’s fine,” Jayne says, then stumbles over his own feet. Kaylee grabs for his arm and nearly collapses with him – he’s heavy.
“Let me get Simon,” Kaylee says. Jayne grunts a negative, still leaning against her. “You’re bleeding, you need stitches. Bandages at least.”
“Do I want to know why you’re bleeding over my nice clean ship?” Mal asks when he wanders into the infirmary, as Simon stitches a long cut down Jayne’s arm.
Jayne glares. “Defending my honor.”
“Your honor?” Simon says, sounding surprised, and Kaylee turns slightly to hide her smile.
“I got honor,” Jayne says. “Said I wasn’t welcome in their sly club.”
Kaylee chokes on nothing and starts coughing, but even so, she can see that Mal and Simon don’t look very surprised. And then they look at each other, and look *very* surprised. Jayne looks between the two of them and grins, self-satisfied and mocking.
“Showed them,” he says. “Won me a pretty partner for tonight too.”
“Is that so?” Mal says darkly, and Kaylee decides this is a good time to go see how River’s doing.

How Cam came out to his parents (well, his mom)
She cornered him on the back porch, late in the evening, the third day he got back, armed with two huge mugs of tea, while his dad was down at the bar for his Wednesday night dominoes game.
“Cameron, honey, if there’s something you want to talk about,” she said, sitting next to him on the step and staring out into the darkness, same way he was. Cam sipped his tea, even though it was too hot, and didn’t say anything. “You know you can always tell me anything. If you’ve met someone, another girl.”
“I haven’t,” Cam said, pressing his hands closer round his mug and forcing himself not to start trembling. “I haven’t met a girl.”
He watched his mom from the corner of his eye – her face was hard to make out in the dark, but she didn’t look shocked or horrified. A bit surprised, maybe.
“Oh, Cameron,” she said softly, and put her arm around him, pulling him close. Cam went, turning his face into her shoulder and letting the shudder run down his spine, not sure if it was relief or just fading fear, and they sat like that for a while, until Cam’s mom said, “Is he handsome?”

Re: How Cam came out to his parents (well, his mom)
When was this set, btw? When he's in university?
Re: How Cam came out to his parents (well, his mom)
Yeah - it's not very clear, because my Cam went to the Air Force Academy, and I have no idea how vacation works there and couldn't find the information, but yes, not long after he went, so he's about the age I was when I came out, early twenties.

Thank you!

Or Radek or Rodney. One to the other?
Radek coming out to Rodney
“It was my evening off, Rodney. I told you not to contact me unless it was an emergency.” He looked up, not surprised to see Rodney with his mouth open and one finger raised, about to speak. “And a minor fluctuation in the temperature of several currently unused labs was not an emergency.”
“It could have been the start of city-wide power fluctuations resulting in the complete failure of all life-support to the city.”
“As we are standing here discussing it, clearly this was not the case,” Radek pointed out rationally. “Also, we could have simply opened the windows to allow in more oxygen, if necessary.”
In the silence that followed, Radek opened his calendar and made a brief note – it was not often that he managed to silence Rodney McKay for more than a second or two.
“Fine,” Rodney says sulkily, flinging himself behind the lab bench next to Radek’s. “If you don’t want to tell me what you were doing, don’t.”
“I did not say that,” Radek said. “You did not give me chance to answer before you started predicting our imminent demise.”
Rodney turned slowly, with an expression of such intense interest that Radek was in no doubt that it was faked. “Please, Radek, tell me, what were you doing last night that kept you so interested that you didn’t even bother to answer your radio? I’m terribly interested in the details of your personal life.”
Radek somewhat doubted that – not that he intended to share these with Rodney anyway. “I was spending the evening with my – I suppose you would say boyfriend, though I suspect we are too old to use such terms any more. It was most pleasant, made more so by not having to leave to deal with inconsequential power fluctuations.”
After a moment, Radek opened up his calendar again, and drew a large red box around the day. Shutting Rodney up twice in one day was an event that should be commemorated.

John coming out to Cam (because I just can't resist the two of them)
John doesn’t find this out until much later – at the time, all he gets is, “I don’t want to talk about it,” and Cam pushing past him to get to the first aid box in John’s tiny Air Force apartment kitchen.
His hands are shaking.
“Let me do it,” John says, nudging Cam into one of the hard wooden kitchen chairs and digging out the antiseptic wipes. “Close your eyes.”
Cam obeys, leaning slightly into John’s hand when he rests it against the back of Cam’s head, holding him still. His skin is clammy under John’s fingers, and John just wants to wrap his arms around Cam and keep him safe. It’s not the first time he’s thought something like that, in the six months since he got made captain and sent to the same base as Cam, but he’s gotten good at keeping these things hidden.
“Are you all right?” he asks; his voice is giving him away, to his own ears at least, but maybe Cam doesn’t know him well enough to pick up on it.
Cam shakes his head, then says, “I’m fine,” then, “My head hurts.”
“I’ll get some aspirin in a second,” John promises.
Cam nods. “Someone,” he says, then stops. There’s a long pause while John wipes the dozen little scrapes and decides none of them need a Band-Aid. “Saw me,” Cam finishes, like he just paused for breath. “Coming out of a club last week.”
The shaking in his hands intensifies and John can’t not try to comfort him, sliding the hand at the back of his head down until it’s almost round his shoulders, like a one armed hug.
“It’s okay,” he says quietly. “If anyone asks, say you were with me.”
Cam takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. “Why?” he asks, relaxing a little further against John.
John leans forward until he can rest his forehead against the top of Cam’s head, more obvious than he’ll ever manage to be out loud. “Because you’re not the only one who needs protecting,” he says.
Re: John coming out to Cam (because I just can't resist the two of them)
Re: John coming out to Cam (because I just can't resist the two of them)
John was... pretty sure, but not that sure. Not sure enough to know if it was okay to say something or not - I imagine them both being very young in this, so the whole not-straight-in-the-Air-Force thing is still new and a bit scary for them.
Re: John coming out to Cam (because I just can't resist the two of them)
You write very well.
Example:
Instead of just writing that Cam paused in his talking (perhaps using ellipses), you made the reader have to wait for his words.

The team find out about Colby's hot air force major boyfriend
“Jenna – remember Jenna, she was at –“ Colby nods before David can remind everyone about *that* disastrous evening, not long before Colby got arrested for spying. “Yeah, well, she’s coming down this weekend, her band are playing at a couple of clubs in town.”
“Yeah?” Colby says, saving his file and actually turning all the way round to face David. “You catching up?”
“Guest list Saturday night. You should come – you need to get out more. You too, Megan,” David adds, catching sight of Megan and Don walking in.
“Did you just say I don’t get out enough?” Megan asks.
“I didn’t mean –“ David starts, but Megan laughs. She’s probably got more of a social life than the rest of them put together.
“Much as I’d love to hang out with the dateless wonder twins,” she says lightly, “I’ve got plans with Larry.”
“You hear that, David – we’re less fun that a physicist,” Colby says, mock-sad, because he’ll never get what Larry and Megan are doing together, for all that it seems to make her really happy.
“Eh,” David says, shrugging. “What about you, Don?”
Don makes his scrunched up face of not-really-all-that-regretful. “Sorry, guys. Weekend away with Robin.”
David shakes his head. “Looks like it’s just you and me, man.”
“Yeah,” Colby says quietly, non-committal. It’s late enough that the office is mostly empty – no-one to hear but his team, and he’s sick of lying to them. “Actually, just you.”
David holds up one finger, glaring at him. “If you’re about to say you have plans with a woman, I’m telling you now, I won’t believe you.”
Don laughs and Megan smiles and Colby ducks his head, fighting not to blush. “Not exactly. My partner’s in town for the weekend, we’re hooking up.”
“I thought I was your partner,” David says, mock-confused, like he’s waiting for the punch-line.
Megan beats Colby to it, clipping the back of David’s head with her file. “Not that kind of partner,” she says, exasperated, and Colby laughs, because at least someone’s one his side. “What’s his name?”
Don makes a surprised sound but chokes it off fast, which Colby figures is a pretty good reaction. “Evan. He’s in the Air Force, spends most of his time deployed overseas.” In some location so secret that Colby doesn’t even have a direct address, just the Air Force base in Colorado Springs, but he’s not going to rehash *that* fight for his team.
“Bring him round to meet everyone,” Megan suggests. “If he’s here for more than the weekend.”
“Yeah, maybe,” Colby says; it’s not that he doesn’t want Evan to meet his friends, or vice versa, more that… well, that if he’s spending time with Evan, he pretty much wants it to be alone time.
Megan shakes her head, drifting away, and Don slaps him on the shoulder the way he does sometimes, when he wants to express some emotion that he’s too much Don Eppes to talk about, and then it’s just Colby and David.
“You okay?” Colby asks. David doesn’t look like he’s about to declare that he wants nothing more to do with Colby, but it’s not that long since their friendship nearly collapsed forever under the weight of Colby keeping a secret he had to. He’s not totally confident it’ll survive him keeping a secret he *didn’t* have to.
David glares at him, brown wrinkled in exasperation. “Of course. Not that you shouldn’t have told me at some point in the last few years.”
“Sorry,” Colby says, to be on the safe side, and David makes a dismissive hand gesture.
“I expect to meet him,” David says sternly.
“Really?”
“Hell, yes. He’s willing to put up with you long-term – I gotta see what this unique specimen is like.”
Re: The team find out about Colby's hot air force major boyfriend
I'm not sure that Colby would be terribly pissed at Evan given that he knows what it's like to have to lie to people you care about, but I'm sure Evan freaked out/will freak out when he found/finds out about the spy thing so fair's fair. I can't even imagine what Evan would make of Colby's team.
Re: The team find out about Colby's hot air force major boyfriend
Megan :( I just hope they don't replace her with Liz and pair her up with Colby... or replace her with Liz at all, come to that.
I'm not sure that Colby would be terribly pissed at Evan
I imagined it as the kind of fight you have when you're more worried than upset - Evan's off somewhere, and can't even say which country he's in, and Colby knows that must mean it's pretty dangerous; so he kind of wants to be reassured that it's not that bad even though he knows it is, and Evan feels badly because he doesn't like lying even though he knows why he has to and it all just got a bit out of control. And then they made up :)
I can't even imagine what Evan would make of Colby's team.
I dunno... I mean, he does deal with Sheppard and McKay on a regular basis, not to mention Cadman, so maybe by comparison they don't seem that odd. And they obviously care for each other, which probably helps.
Re: The team find out about Colby's hot air force major boyfriend
They are replacing her with Liz, and I think they're setting her up with Colby. But the minute I saw them heading down that road, I fixed it in my head.
What really happened at the end of "Pay to Play" is they went for a few drinks at the country bar and then, as the night went on, they somehow found themselves in a very low key gay and lesbian bar.
Colby revealed he was gay and dating a guy who he couldn't talk about because "air force," (Liz rolls her eyes a bit at this point, but gives him a very sympathetic look) and Liz revealed she was bi and feeling things out with a woman she met while working narcotics (Colby grins dirtily). Since neither one wanted to come out to anyone at the FBI, they agreed to cover for each other and pose as a couple. That way Colby can stop hitting up Megan for fake dates and Liz, doesn't have to deal with the assholes at the FBI who think that just because she dated her boss, she'll sleep with them.
So even if they do "get together," I'm totally covered.

Or Simon. Maybe coming out to Mal (and maybe he's a little in love with Mal, but he doesn't have to come out (no pun intended) and say that)
Mal comes out to Zoe (more or less)
“Morning,” she says.
“Morning,” the man says with a smile. “Pleasant day.”
Zoë nods – she hasn’t been by any windows yet today to see. She makes herself tea in silence, waiting for the man to say something else; maybe some indication of exactly what he’s doing on her ship. He doesn’t belong to her, and Kaylee always has her men off the ship by nightfall, and – and he’s naked, in her kitchen, which aint all that sanitary, for one, and aint what she expects first thing in the morning, for two.
There’s not, as it happens, any way to take her leave gracefully, so she nods and walks out, tea in hand, in search of Mal. Who turns out to be coming the other way, whistling. She can’t think she’s ever heard him whistle.
“Morning, sir.”
“Zoë,” he says, smiling. “And how are you this fine morning?”
“Better before I found we’ve a naked passenger I know nothing about.”
“Is that so?” Mal asks, but his face is slowly turning red, and he’s looking very intently at her left ear.
“Seems to be,” she says, fighting down her own grin. Of all the possible explanations, she wouldn’t have ever expected this one. “Something you want to tell me, sir?”
Mal maybe catches the laughter she can’t quite keep out of her voice, because he looks up and glares. “Seems you’ve it all figured out your own self,” he says. “So we’ll say no more about it.”
“If you say so, sir,” Zoë agrees, and watches him go. In your dreams.
Re: Mal comes out to Zoe (more or less)
(Did I mentioned the character voices are perfect? 'Cause they are.)
Re: Mal comes out to Zoe (more or less)
I really think the question of what kind of man Mal favours is probably one best left unexplored too deeply.
Did I mentioned the character voices are perfect? 'Cause they are
Thank you! I always find Firefly voices quite hard, because of the the very informal langauge and grammar, so that's really nce to hear :-)
Re: Mal comes out to Zoe (more or less)
Yeah, that's one of the things that keeps me from writing Firefly fic, actually. I think you did a great job with it.

Lorne coming out to Cadman (no snoopy dancing mom's, though, sorry)
What she can’t figure out is how to let him know that she’s safe.
She tries teasing, which is interesting in that it makes him flush bright red and grin, awkward and cute. He changes the subject fast, though. She tries pointing out a couple of cute guys playing pool when they go out with a bunch of other people from the SGC for Captain Pierson’s birthday, but he just rolls his eyes and shakes his head. She tries mentioning her pause-room-mate from college, knowing he’ll know what the pause really means; all it gets her is a friendly smile, like she really is talking about someone who was just her room-mate. She even tries bringing up a friend from when she was in a regular marine unit, who got discharged under don’t ask don’t tell. Lorne is sympathetic and agrees that it sucks, and never one gives even a shadow of a hint that he might feel, like Laura did, angry for themselves as well as for her friend.
It takes an attack on the SGC that lasts three days and ends with the two of them on Laura’s living room floor, half drunk on exhaustion and the remains of a bottle of wine, Laura leaning her head against Lorne’s arm.
“I just want to sleep for a week,” she says, running one finger compulsively over the line of stitches in the back of his hand. Two hours crawling through air ducts with a guy turns out to erode personal space boundaries pretty effectively.
Lorne reaches up and ruffles her hair, cut short again after she got pissed off with it always being in her face, even when she tied it back. “Two days do you?” he asks.
“Better than nothing,” she says, thinking about the laundry that needs doing, the mess her bedroom is in, the fact that she has nothing to eat but rice cakes from last time Jessica visited. “Crash here if you want.”
“Can’t,” Lorne says. “Got a friend coming for a few days.”
Laura’s exhausted and drunk and it takes her a few seconds to realize what she just heard – a slight pause before the word ‘friend.’ Lorne must feel her tense up in surprise; he looks down at her, smiling faintly, and she really really wants to just hug him, because he’s her best friend and she loves him and, seriously, finally.
“About time,” she says instead.
“Like you didn’t know all along anyway,” Lorne says and wraps an arm round her shoulders, pulling her close.
