In my on-going watching of random shows I can get cheaply on Amazon, I'm onto Flashpoint, which is about a SWAT/negotiation team in I think Canada (mainly because I've also been watching Rookie Blue, which is definitely set in Canada, and this show is like a rolling roster of Rookie Blue actors).

What I like best about it? There's an episode where it turns out a police officer, not one of the team, is beating his wife, and they end up arresting him. He's brought in by one of their officers who's just told the victim that his wife was abused by her first husband, and there's a degree of all of them being angry about what he did. But no-one hits him, pushes him around, pulls his cuffs too tight, "accidentally" smacks his head on a low door, all of which I've seen good guys do on other shows. I love that the guys who exist to shoot people if necessary don't use any kind of violence or force, because they're the good guys. I like a show with good guys who are good, no 'it's okay because it's for the greater good' or whatever.

And on a totally different note, I want a Black Widow hoodie and can't find one, so I'm going to create my own once I actually get around to buying a black hoodie to do it with. I want to put widow bites on the wrists, and an Avengers symbol on the front, and I'm not sure what goes on the back, but I want to include a good Black Widow quote. I'm also thinking about doing a Hawkeye version, once I figure out what that would include.

So: what are your quintessential Black Widow or Hawkeye quotes?

So, I have a lesbian crush on Jeremy Renner, so much so that I actually watched a Mission Impossible movie (Tom Cruise gives me the creeps). Which was entertainingly goofy, for the record, though I'm not totally sure I followed the plot and all the bad guys.

I also watched The Hurt Locker )

Anyway: today I posted off all my documents for the police check I'll need to apply for a working visa to Canada when the programme reopens for 2013. sort of swinging between incredibly excited and totally terrified. I need my friend who's championing the idea to get back from Israel already!

So: hi. Long time no see, how's everyone doing?

I was going to write a bit about how life has been going lately, but it summarises to 'not well' and I can't stand to get into it all. So instead, holiday wish lists!

* Make a post (public, friends/access locked, filtered, whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

* If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

* Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.

Wishes )

And now, the flip-side of Christmas wishes: I don't do Christmas cards, generally, I donate to a charity instead. But for the last three years, I've done Christmas ficlets; this year they might be closer to new year than christmas since I'm a bit behind, but leave a comment with a fandom, pairing/character and prompt, and I promise a ficlet even if it's belated

So, after the better part of a decade in fandom, I just got flamed. I'm not really sure why those two stories set off such vitriol - I don't think two men breaking up, and then two men getting interrupted in the middle of having sex exactly counts as a masturbatory fantasy even if I wasn't a lesbian, but what do I know? Actually, I'm not even sure what you'd have to be googling related to Stargate or Numbers to come across those two stories.

Also, thanks for the advice, but I already write my own stories about my own characters, and sell them, so my flamer is tragically late to that party.

Plus, die in a fire and get cancer? Shouldn't it be the other way around - I hardly think I'm going to care about getting cancer if I've already died in a fire.

Still, I've never been flamed before, I feel sort of like this occasion should be honoured somehow. Realistically, by writing homoerotic stories while leeching off talented writers of other shows :) Anyone want to prompt me?

Hi Yuletide author!

Thank you for signing up to write one of my fandoms. I can pretty much guarantee that I'll love whatever you write, so if you've got a brilliant idea that you just love and *have* to write, feel free to do it. If you're like me and find yourself staring at a blank screen really wanting to write but not knowing where to start, hopefully this will help.

Generally I love hurt/comfort, mild angst, positive endings, friendship stories, verbal humour, mild teasing, AUs, future fic, stuff set before the show started, slash/femslash, developing relationships, gen/friendship, caring and affection, queer communities, kid fic, kittens and puppies, bookshops.

I don’t like humiliation, embarrassment, people being made to look stupid, outright humour stories, excessive violence, PWP, het.

For the specific fandoms:

1. Imagine Me And You

I'd love to see Lucy introducing Rachel to her friends, or Rachel becoming part of the lesbian community around her. Or a lazy Sunday with the two of them doing nothing much - maybe visiting Lucy's mother?

Rachel and Lucy are my favourite characters in the film - I'm less interested in Hector - and I'd love to see the different ways they're part of the gay community. Does Rachel identify as bisexual or lesbian or something else? What's difficult for the two of them about being together (within their relationship more than external homophobia)? What about Rachel's sister, how does she relate to Lucy?

2. Tipping the Velvet

I'd love to know more about Florence - what she does, her lesbian community and friends, her relationship with her dead friend and the baby. I prefer book fandom, where Florence is more embedded in the lesbian community than Nan, but I love TV canon as well. Alternatively, something about Nan rebuilding her relationship with her family after the end of the book/series, or what happens next for one or both of them

I like Florence the best because she's a feminist and she works hard and she's tired, and then she gets the girl at the end. I like that both she and Nan identify as lesbian. I like Nan because of her inner toughness that carries her through the book/series, and that she gets her happy ending. I'd really prefer you didn't break the two of them up.

3. I Capture the Castle

I'd love to see Cassie once she grows up - what she does, who she becomes. I feel like the book is her as defined by the men around her, I'd love to see who she is without them. How does she change as society changes as she gets older? does she get married, have a family, become a force for social change, fall for a girl...

I think Cassie makes the book interesting because she's so young that she doesn't see or understand some things, but as she grows up that can change. She really lends herself to having future fic written about her, I think, because she's just at the point where she's starting to figure out and become who she is. I love stories about girls who fall in love with girls, so if you write Cassie in a lesbian relationship, I'll love you forever, but gen is good too. I'd prefer not to see her paired with any of the men in the book

4. Garth Nix's old Kingdom

I'd like to see Ellimere and Lirael save the world together somehow. Or bonding over their roles, meeting each other, how do they get along (or not). Alternatively, something about Ellimere's perspective during the second two books, or Lirael going home to the Clair as a hero

I love, love, love these books, especially Lirael, the character and the book. I like that the main characters are almost all female and are treated equally to the male characters, that they take on the rescues and run the kingdom and predict the future and try to change the world and succeed even though it hurts them. I love that, especially in the second two books, there’s no romantic subplot, and that friendships and family are so important.

I’d love something that picks up after the last book, looking at how Lirael becomes part of the family she never knew about, and how Ellimere deals with the Clair and her new aunt. I love Ryelle and Sanar as individuals and as twins, and I’d love something with the four of them together as friends and family and doing something that young women would do, if you want to include the two of them. Maybe something that deals with what Lirael in particular lost in the last battle, both physically and emotionally.

So, I might have done what I always do when I get into something new, and read a few fics by people who's stuff I know and love, got totally hooked and gone on a mad reading spree as well as watching the canon repeatedly.

Which is a longish way of saying that Tesco had Avengers Assemble on special offer and I bought it having got hooked on fic about the characters. I don't think I've watched a superhero movie since The Incredibles.

Should I cut for spoilers? Better safe than sorry, right? )

So, question: is it worth watching the various other movies in the same universe?

Total change of subject: I haven't watched the first two episodes of 5-0, mostly because I haven't actually had a solid fort-five minutes at home in weeks. But I've got this story in my head in which Steve is Stephanie and still sleeping with Catherine and goes out bar-hopping with Kono and is still best friends with Danny.

My question is: in the first episode, Danny punches Steve for basically being annoying and gettig him shot. I don't know why, but I have a hard time imagining Danny hiting a woman for the same reasons (though he did swing a part of a boat into a woman sort-of-bad-guy). And the whole being put on his knees thing would, I think, be treated as maybe more humiliating by the people around him if it was done by a woman? What I can't figure out is, if Danny wouldn't punch her, what would he do? My brain keeps getting stuck - help?

And sort-of left conversational turn again: I couldn't sign up for this year's femslash exchange because I didn't know *any* of the listed fandoms (well, now Avengers, but sign ups are closed). I used to know loads of them, and I find this kind of depressing. Any good recs for femslashy shows or movies I ougt to be picking up?

And that's it for this whsitle stop tour of bluflamingo and fandom. Please exit the ride to your left, and take all belognings with you :)

I haven't been much for reading John/Rodney in quite a few years now, unless it sounds really my kind of thing, or is written by someone I trust not to hit any of my hot-button argh! issues. Particularly when people write post-season 5, I hate the way most of them deal with Keller.

I don't think it really hit me until today though how much I'm out of that pairing now. I'm reading recs for mcshep match, and a lot of them sound great - except that the pairing is John/Rodney and apparently that's enough to make me not want to read. Or it mentions a Rodney-fanon thing that I used to be able to gloss over and now can't.

Not that I was ever a huge shipper of them, and I haven't written the pairing in years, but it feels weird to think there's nothing in that challenge that I want to even give a try to this year. Not because the stories are no good, but because of me.

Though I would read the hell out of a story where Rodney and Jennifer break up and Rodney comes to John as his second choice and doesn't get to have John. Not even if he apologises, not even if John likes him that way, not for any reason, and especially not if Rodney always knew John liked him and just wanted to be normal or whatever. Which I am so totally not writing, because I'm halfway through a Hawaii Five-0 fic that also doesn't have a happy ending, and really one at a time ought to be my limit.

Especially since I signed up for cotton candy bingo and decided I want all of my fics to be post-apocalypse fluff - thanks, colls, for posting about both challenges in the same post!

It's been a while since I did this, and I'm currently working my way through a number of job applications (Hence why I haven't replied to any of the comments about moving to Canada, I'm sorry, and I really appreciate your feedback, thoughts and things to think about) but I'm seeing it all over my flist and dwircle, which is making me want to do it again...

Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any fanfic I’ve written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what’s going on in the character’s heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

I feel like I've fallen off the face of the Earth lately - possibly because I haven't spoken to an actual person since last Friday. Which is when I went to see the doctor with earache, got told I had tonsillitis and was put on anti-biotics that make me feel like I'm going to pass out if I'm not lying down, and like I'm going to throw up.

And I have another three days to go :(

On the bright side, my ear doesn't hurt any more :)

That aside, it's been a weird couple of weeks - I nearly adopted a second cat, then pulled out at the last minute and I'm still not really sure why.

I'm looking at jobs, but thinking about maybe just quitting and temping for a while, so I have some mental space to think, plan what I want to do with my life, study, write, volunteer, meet people. Basically, not feel guilty for being off work for three days when I'm sick and can hardly go out. Assuming I could make a decent salary, anyway.

And I said, as a joke to my counsellor, that maybe I'll quit work and go work in Canada for six months. recounted this to a friend, who said, okay, look into it. And now I kind of have a plan? And am actually sort of thinking about whether I could do it? I mean, I wanted to, a few years back, but I freaked and didn't go ahead. But now... I don't know. Tell me stories about studying/working abroad and how amazing it was? Because even just writing it here makes me feel scared, like I'm committing to the idea somehow and I'm not sure I'm ready to yet.

I don't know. I feel like something's going to happen - like anything could happen, like something big is coming, and it's scary, but also it's kind of... exciting?

Since I moved a couple of days ago, I haven't been able to access any https sites on any browser from my laptop.

I tried clearing my browser histories, I tried uninstalling my anti-virus software, I even tried doing a system restore to before I moved. None of it has worked - I can't access my email, and now I can't login into livejournal either.

I suspect the next step is to call my broadband provider and see what they can do, but I figured I'd see if anyone on my dwircle/flist had any brilliant suggestions in the meantime?

I want to read [livejournal.com profile] verasteine's novel-length Steve/Danny fic, but I only lasted five chapters because reading it hurts far more than I want my fiction reading to hurt me - hence why I gave up on stories where John gets killed, no matter how good they are.

So: rec me your favourite stories? Preferably with happy endings and no-one dying :)
