Had a meeting with my PhD supervisor this morning in which I had to admit that I haven't done any work for the last couple of months (with good reasons, but still). She was great and really supportive about it, and actually managed to make me feel motivated again (I got turned down for funding again, which killed any motivation to work on it, as I'm not sure I've the time or the money to carry on next year).

Also, I've been rewatching The West Wing lately. I started with season five, so towards the end of their run, and when I got to the end, went back to the start of season one. The contrast between the two halves (Aaron Sorkin years v John Wells years) is incredibly jarring like this, and I have to admit, I think the end is better than the beginning because:

1. CJ Cregg: it becomes more and more her story as we get to the end and I love that. I love that she's in control and brilliant but not perfect, and I love that people stop treating her (and she stops being written) as though she's slightly hopeless, and that people stop saying things like ambition being a bad thing for a woman to have

2. Donna Moss: I love that she takes control of her future. She leaves Josh, she joins Russell's campaign, she's respected and promoted and recruited later on, and then she becomes the First Lady's Chief of Staff. And she takes the lead in her relationship with Josh, sets her boundaries, and enforces them. By the end of season 7, I swear she's my favourite character.

3. Santos' campaign team: women! Lots of them! And they're different, and have different skills and different roles, and they're all good at what they do. And respected for it. And we sometimes see them talk to each other. (Honestly, early TWW, how many non-assistant/wife women did we see? Two? Very poor, show!)

4. Women: working together. Talking. Having friendships. Amy comes back. Kate Harper appears and sticks around. Margaret. Joey Lucas (and how much do I love that the two of them are pregnant and there's never any mention of the man and it's not big deal?) Ellie, Zoey, Liz.

5. Also, because it doesn't have the things I hated about the early seasons: no magically disappearing apparently forgotten Mandy (though I'd have loved for her to come back). No Ainsley Hayes (loved the idea of her, hated how they executed it and made her not just anti-feminist but an idiot about it: women didn't need the ERA because they're covered by the constitution? Now, sure, but then? No. That she never recognised that makes her look stupid).

Although I gotta say: I wish Vinick had won. At least he was pro-choice for real, not like Santos, who pretended to be in order to win. And also that they hadn't thrown in Ellie being totally straight, no for real, we swear and ps thank God she is. What was that about?

Still, can't have everything, I suppose.

I'm watching season 4 of The West Wing, which I've never seen before (I stopped watching partway through season 2 when it was airing, I can't remember why, then cried through the end of the last episode, because I'm a sap), and would like to say:

1. Nancy McNally is awesome, and I love how much they all respect her, especially Admiral Fitzwallace. Who is also damn cool.

2. I love CJ. So much. She's amazing.

3. Sam has a different office, right? Or they moved the furniture or something, but I'm sure he used to have a bookcase behind his desk.

4. CJ coming back to her briefing to announce the pipe bomb at the swim meet and all the dead students is possibly the most jarring thing I've seen on TV in ages. There's no indication that it's coming *at all* and then, there. It's very effective.

5. If I was Amy Gardner, I'd have kicked Josh long before now. I do not get what she's supposed to see in him.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon is running again for the first two weeks of February, for people to post female centric fic, art, recs, whatever. I'm not going to make every day, but I'm hoping to hit 4:
1. The depressing het break-up fic I was going on about before
2. The Simpson/Cadman fic I started ages ago, which, with (1) will complete the Dysfunction verse.
3. Something about Carolyn Lam.
4. Something about Zoey's secret service agent in season 1, Gina.

If you felt inclined to throw Carolyn-centric prompts (anything but something about her and Landry) my way, I would not say no.

From [livejournal.com profile] raedbard's prompt of Ellie, Jed, "somewhere we used to live": Going Home, post-West Wing, my fix for the weird bit of canon that was Ellie getting pregnant and married.

ETA: from [livejournal.com profile] black_eyedgirl's prompt of Wash&Simon "waiting is the hardest part" and with a title shamelessly stolen from an episode of Atlantis: Common Ground

Also, from [livejournal.com profile] raedbard and [livejournal.com profile] black_eyedgirl: Pick 12 characters you like, and then answer the questions below the cut about them. Obviously first choose your characters before you see the questions.

1. John Sheppard (SGA)
2. Ellie Bartlett (TWW)
3. Cameron Mitchell (SG1)
4. Laura Cadman (SGA)
5. Kaylee Frye (FF)
6. Zoey Bartlett (TWW)
7. Sara Sidle (CSI)
8. Aiden Burn (CSI:NY)
9. Ianto Jones (TW)
10. Spencer Reid (CM)
11. Mal Reynolds (FF)
12. Gina Tocsano (TWW)

And you thought your pairing was bizarre! )

Should I be worried that Amazon are recommending The Dairy Goat to me, based on previous purchases? How do you go from Hotel Babylon and Stargate Atlantis to The Dairy Goat?!

Anyway, on to less insane things: [livejournal.com profile] sangerin wrote Looking Back, Moving On (the Reality Check remix), a West Wing CJ/Abbey piece from Reality. It's a fantastic look at the history between the two of them, everything thatt happened before and after what happens in 'Reality'.

And I wrote Irregular (the Dawn to Dusk remix), from [livejournal.com profile] castaliae's Bad Moon Rising, which has a West Wing title but is actually about Firefly's Inara.

Because my story for the West Wing AU-athon is like banging my head against a brick wall, only less productive and more painful, here’s my favourite 5 of my stories, from the meme that’s going around:

1. What if I Told You Stargate Atlantis/SG-1, John/Cameron. My last fic for [livejournal.com profile] 14valentines: from watching Cameron at the end of The Quest, and John at the end of Sunday and thinking they needed someone to comfort them. I wanted it to show that they care for each other, and that they have for a while, and I think it’s in there, from John going to Cameron because he’s hurting and Cameron knowing who it is, to them collapsing on each other and only having sex in the middle of the night, when it’s dark, to the end with them wanting to be nearer and not being able to. It’s John and Cameron exactly the way that I see them.

2. Worth Staying For: CSI/CSI:NY, Sarah/Aiden. Written for a challenge from a very specific prompt that was probably the only prompt I’ve ever looked at and had an instant idea for that’s worked. Sarah and Aiden are my CSI-verse OTP, and I like how the story builds from them not really being able to get on to Aiden leaving because she has to, and making promises to return.

3. Stumbling Homewards: King Arthur, Gawain/Tristan. I got into King Arthur for Arthur and Lancelot (they might as well be canon!), but I ended up writing about Gawain and Galahad and Tristan. I loved the film, but I missed the mysticism I was expecting, and this is one of my stories that has that, with Tristan haunting Gawain as a falcon while Gawain and Galahad make their way home after the end of the movie. It’s also one of my many fics that has a half-written sequel in my head, so I fear it’s only a matter of time before it carries on…

4. A Dark Magician: King Arthur, no pairing. More mysticism, more Gawain, though this time stuck in a cave with Lancelot. This was me trying to put the wizardiness into Merlin, which is sadly lacking in the film, and trying to explain how he got so tied up with Arthur’s knights. I’m not sure what it is I like about this, but it just seemed to work when I was writing it, and I liked my Lancelot in it.

I don’t know that I have a fifth favourite. The first four were easy to pick, but now I don’t know. I’m kind of tempted to say my space pirate AU for Atlantis, because I think the premise is cool. Or All Roads Lead to the White House, a Josh/Leo, Josh/CJ West Wing fic for [livejournal.com profile] tww_minis, just because, when I got the prompt I spent a week staring at it going I can’t write that!

All right…

5. Two Stepping: Stargate Atlantis, Katie Brown/Laura Cadman, because I’m a femslasher at heart and this just flowed when I was writing it. Laura’s fun and they just seemed like a natural fit to me because honestly, I do not get what Katie is meant to be doing with Rodney – that’s just bizarre!
